Doc Willie Ong Update: Battle with Cancer, Fight of Faith, and Bid for Senate

Since he disclosed his sarcoma cancer diagnosis in September and filed his COC for senator in October, followers and supporters of Doc Willie Ong have been anticipating the latest updates regarding his condition. After capturing the attention and hearts of many (at last), how is our beloved Filipino cardiologist, health advocate, and senatorial hopeful doing so far?

Popularly known for his health tips and advocacy, Doc Willie Ong’s life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. As a blogger of Dr. Ong since 2019, I want to delve deeper into his fight against cancer, his unwavering faith, and his ongoing campaign for a seat in the Philippine Senate for the second time.

The Battle with Cancer

In September 2024, Dr. Willie Ong disclosed to his millions of followers on social media that he had been diagnosed with a massive sarcoma in his abdomen. The tumor, measuring approximately 16 x 13 x 12 centimeters, was described as one of the largest his doctors had encountered, lodged dangerously behind his heart and in front of his spine. The initial prognosis was grim, with Ong facing a 50-50 chance of survival, dealing with severe symptoms like difficulty swallowing due to the tumor’s position.

Dr. Ong’s treatment journey began in Singapore, where he received specialized care under Dr. Ang Peng Tiam. After six weeks of chemotherapy, there was a remarkable turn; his tumor had shrunk by 60%, which his medical team labeled as a “miracle.” This progress was shared with the public, showcasing not only his physical battle but also the emotional and spiritual resilience he maintained throughout his treatment. By December 2024, Doc Willie had completed his sixth and, hopefully, the final cycle of chemotherapy, signaling a significant milestone in his fight for survival. According to Doc Willie Ong, based on our communication, he still needs to wait for the PET scan after three weeks to determine if another chemo is necessary.

The Fight of Faith

Throughout his ordeal, Doctor Willie Ong has leaned heavily on his faith. In his public statements, he expressed gratitude for the prayers and support from his community, often framing his health battle as a testament to faith’s power. His approach to his illness has been holistic, combining medical treatment with spiritual strength, which he believes has played a crucial role in his recovery. Even the popular and multiple awardee journalist, Jessica Soho, prayed for him on national TV through her famous show KMJS (Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho).

In one particularly moving anecdote, Dr. Ong shared how he would start each day in prayer, asking for strength and guidance. “I would pray not just for healing but for understanding and acceptance,” he said during a video update. Ong described moments of solitude during his treatment where he turned to the Bible for comfort, particularly the verse Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” He often spoke about finding peace in surrendering his fears and uncertainties to God.

Through these experiences, Ong’s faith became not only a personal anchor but also an inspiration for others not only for cancer patients and survivors but for the public as well whatever challenges they are dealing with. He frequently encouraged his followers to trust in God’s timing and to seek strength through prayer, regardless of the challenges they faced. His spiritual resilience has inspired many Filipinos, reminding them of the power of faith in overcoming life’s adversities.

The Bid for Senate

Even amidst his battle with cancer, Doc Willie Ong’s commitment to public service did not waver. On October 3, 2024, his wife, Dr. Anna Liza Ramoso-Ong, filed his certificate of candidacy for the May 2025 senatorial elections on his behalf. Running under Aksyon Demokratiko, Ong aims to bring his medical expertise and advocacy for health reform to the Senate. His previous attempts in politics, including a vice-presidential run in 2022 and a senatorial bid in 2019, have shown his dedication to impacting public health policy, particularly for the underserved.

Lawyer Gilbert Lauengco, Dr. Willie Ong’s legal counsel, stated during the filing of his COC that Dr. Ong intends to leverage social media as a primary tool for his campaign. Lauengco also mentioned that Ong might return to the Philippines by the end of this year to engage in physical campaigning.

“He plans to return for a limited physical campaign from December to January. By February, he will visit key areas where his physical presence is deemed crucial,” Lauengco explained. That, of course, depends on the PET scan result we’re waiting for after his sixth chemo.

As such, Dr. Ong’s campaign strategy heavily relies on social media, mirroring his approach to health education. He plans a limited physical campaign due to his health, focusing on connecting with voters through platforms where he already has a substantial following. His campaign is not just about winning a seat; it’s about continuing his fight for better healthcare access, advocating for free or affordable cancer treatment, and addressing the systemic issues in Philippine healthcare. His experience in Singapore gives him a better idea of how to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.

The Spirit of Perseverance

Doc Willie Ong’s story is beyond resilience; it’s a powerful testimony of faith and unwavering service to the public. His battle with sarcoma has not only been a personal journey but also a public narrative that resonates with many Filipinos. It underscores the human capacity to face formidable challenges with hope and determination. Whether or not Ong secures a Senate seat, his legacy as a health advocate, his approach to his own illness, and his push for systemic change in healthcare will continue to inspire and influence many. As Ong himself has said, “Faith that people will understand. Faith that God will give him enough time to finish this, and faith that enough people will like him and support him enough to propel him to the Senate.” His story is far from over, and his battles on multiple fronts are providential to the spirit of perseverance.
